Cloth Modeling

In order to learn how to better design clothing patterns, I went to a factory and consulted with a creative director who has decades of experience in clothing design.


Houdini Hair Tools
One of Violet’s most appealing features in the original work is her beautiful and flowing hair (although this meant a massive workload for the original illustrators and animators). To attempt to recreate this exquisite effect in Houdini, I built a node network in Houdini to achieve a high degree of customization, and created several HDAs to procedurally generate hair that conforms to the original design and simulates realistic movement.



In order to implement Violet’s braided hair, I wrote a node to generate braids programmatically. Although there are tools with similar effects in Maya, Houdini provides lower level deformation tools.
Using specific parameters, it can generate braids of different styles. And variables can ramp along the curve.




Mechanical Arm Model & Rigging
In the story, Violet lost both arms due to war and obtained prosthetic limbs in the hospital.
I think the biggest challenge is that as a manga work, there is no need to consider precise mechanical structures, but when making 3D models, it is necessary to rely on design and imagination to give them real mechanical structures.
